There was a particularly intense rainfall event Oct. 12-13, 2009 in California as measured by the meteorological stations at the UC Natural Reserve at Big Sur. You can see the orographic effect during the storm, with greater rainfall at higher elevations. The chart below shows cumulative rainfall on the left axis (thick lines showing accumulation, inches of rain) and rainfall rate (in./hr) on the right axis with the thinner lines. Total rainfall for this event is greatest for Mining Ridge (elev. 3288 ft) with nearly 22.5 inches of rainfall, and lowest for Whale Point (elev. 600 ft). The rainfall rate was greatest around 1.55 days since Oct 12 with a value of 1.75 in/hr for Mining Ridge.
